Favorite Summer Snack.

I never liked tomatoes until a few years ago and I can’t believe I never used to like them because I LOVE them now.  Caprese salads are one of my most favorite dishes.  I found this simple caprese kabob idea on Pinterest and it’s been my go-to appetizer to bring to parties hosted by other people.

The ingredients are this simple: toothpicks, mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil.  I like to add sea salt and some balsamic/olive oil drizzled over but you can eat them without those and they are just as tasty.

They are simple, non-messy, and usually a big hit since they aren’t too heavy.

Enjoy!

Found Object Art.

1About a year ago, my friend Lindsay dragged half of a broken tree to my doorstep because she knew I was on the lookout for good piece of branch for an art project. What a friend, I mean she stumbled up them gem on a walk and carried it to me! I didn’t have the end result in my mind at the time but I knew it needed to be big; it had to with a start like this one. I began by taking my favorite piece and spraying it gold. It sat like that for about a year until I was inspired by something I saw on Pinterest. After scooping up some yarn and strings of leather, I quickly put together a great piece of wall art.

I really love the end result. It is so simple but adds a lot of color to our room. The teal is the same color as a desk that I have and the orange flows nicely with our duvet. There are somethings that you have to go out and make in order for it to be exactly what you need.

Easy Hair DIY.

IMG_1756

On New Years, I was googling different easy hair styles to put together to use for the night.  However, in looking I realized they all said easy but were not so I made it super simple.  You have to start with a head of full curled hair so that may take a while but then after that it’s super simple.

IMG_1765
If you choose to add an headbands or flashy pieces, do it first before you pin any other pieces of hair.  I added this bedazzled headband so I locked it in first thing.

IMG_1758
After that, pull some of the curled pieces from in front of the band and behind to twirl behind and pin in a half up position.

IMG_1757
I stopped here (less than 3 mins) but you can keep pinning sections like this.  The next small section would pin below the first and so on.  Once the bottom is pinned as far as you can go, you can take the tails of your hair still hanging and twirl them up and pin the hair in place to be a messy low bun.  I’ve also done that which is easy but takes about 10-15 mins.  Make sure to pin that well so when you put a jacket on or there is movement around the hair, it won’t get pulled out.

Voila!  This is the hair DIY from yesterday’s post.

Smart Chia Seed Almond Breakfast.

IMG_0691
I’ve never dabbled with the chia seed craze but a friend at work shared this super simple recipe that I love.  She even brought some into work for a few of us to try to sell us and it’s so delicious!  It’s easy to make but you need to let it set over night in the fridge.  Here’s the skinny on what you need and what to do:

  • 1 cup vanilla unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 T chia seeds
  • 1 t vanilla extract
  • 2-3 t agave nectar syrup
  • Dash of cinnamon (I actually didn’t have cinnamon so I substituted with ground ginger)
  • Wisk or shake in mason jar make sure that all seeds and syrup is incorporated
  • Refrigerate overnight
  • Eat with berries and chopped raw almonds if preferred

Pre mixed and pre berries.

IMG_0701
After it set overnight, I added fresh raspberries.  It’s so tasty and filling.  The chia seeds expand and get soft like boba tea and it’s delightful.  I share this info though in case you are a texture person who does not prefer tapioca type textures 🙂

The mason jar made it really easy for me to transport.  I never usually have time to eat at home in the morning but was able to eat once I got to work.

Start your week off healthy and strong – enjoy!

Leftover Manicure

IMG_7443Not the kind of left overs you are probably thinking about.  I had these two nail stickers leftover from when Chels and I went nail sticker crazy so I decided to use the last two stickers for a Leftover Manicure.  These stickers really are the best because they can put up with my wear and tear!

IMG_7445(I painted all but one nail on each hand and used the leftover stickers to switch it up a bit)

IMG_7448(A nail file is the key to these sticker manicures.  The file helps shave off the ends)

Ta-da!  Easy and fun nails.  If you end up doing your nails like this or have any other fun nail ideas, send us a pic because we’d love to see!

Braided Top Knot

IMG_7074

It’s hard to have a cute up-do that’s fun and sophisticated.  One day I had my hair in a pony tail and wanted to add something to it.  Not have just a typical bun or pony tail.  So I braided and twirled and ended up with this easy to do bun!

IMG_70851. Start with a regular pony tail

IMG_70842. Separate strands to start braid

IMG_70833. Braid hair until 1 or 2 inches from the ends of your hair

IMG_70824. Twirl braid around the base of your pony tail

IMG_70815. Tuck the ends of the braid under one of the elastic loops holding your pony tail

IMG_70796. Pin any crazy, out of control pieces down unless you like how they look

IMG_70777. Voila!  Scope it, so easy.

Edible Fairy Wands

IMG_6451It’s every twenty something year olds dream to have these magical sweet treats!  Chels and I first discovered these at a fund raiser which was dangerous because if you know your money is going to a good cause why not buy hundreds of them and indulge??  After all, it is helping somebody else!  Anyway, anything dipped in chocolate is a gift from God.  I don’t know if you have noticed but we are all about simple fixes and these are a great treat that you can share with others.

What you will need:
– Long Stemmed Pretzels
– White Chocolate Chips
– Sprinkles and/or any other desired toppings (our favorite choices: mini-marshmallows, coconut flakes, sparkly sprinkles)

IMG_6356(First step: Gather all your ingredients and place chocolate chips in a heating pan on the stove.  I’ve heard you can use the microwave but then the chocolate would harden much faster so I wouldn’t suggest it.  You want to have the pretzels out and ready to dip though because once the chocolate is melted, it’s go time)

IMG_6361(BEWARE: We melted on heat level 1.  The chocolate chips must melt on a very low level, otherwise they don’t become a creamy consistency and will actually harden/burn.  Once the chocolate is melted, you must work quickly.  Keep the burner on though as you start dipping.)

IMG_6370(We learned that tilting the pan to the side allowed for more chocolate which is always a plus)

IMG_6371(Twirl the magic wand as you start to remove it from the melted chocolate.  This helps swivel off some of the extra chocolate and make the wand look much more consistent)

IMG_6366(Now here’s the fun part!  Sprinkle your little hearts out.  We sprinkled over the sink because this can be a tad messy)

IMG_6487Lay them out to dry and then serve them up!  We couldn’t help but sample them along the way, you know, to make sure they all tasted alright.

Hey, they can’t all come out perfect looking but don’t worry they won’t last long anyway.  The combination of salty sweet gets everyone addicted instantly and before you know it, all that’s left are scattered sprinkles like a fairy crime scene.

No, I don’t want no scrubs …

I just want a sea salt exfoliate.  Big difference.  Chelsea had been talking about this amazing body “scrub” that she had made a few years ago and how great it made her skin feel.  Before she left for her trip, she decided to make a few batches while I worked on another project.  Let me tell you, this stuff is amazing.  I’m a pretty simple person and not into too many scents or crazy soaps but this is so refreshing and makes your skin so smooth!

What you will need (We stocked up on ours from Whole Foods):
1. Sea Salt
2. Coconut Oil
3. Lemons

IMG_6473(To start out, you may have to heat up the Coconut Oil because you want to make sure that it’s a liquid consistency)

IMG_6466(After the oil has turned to liquid, add it to the sea salt in a large mixing bowl.  The amount of sea salt and oil you use all depends on the storage containers you are going to put them in at the end.  We used mason jars here.)

IMG_6468(Squeeze fresh lemon in to liking.  We added extra lemon because it smells so good!)

IMG_6475(Place the delicious contents in mason jars and add some big chunk slices of lemon.  Voila!  A natural and fabulous body exfoliate.)

These could be a great and thoughtful gift for a friend or family member’s birthday.  Or you could even make this to keep and pamper yourself.  Either way, it’s very simple to make these.  Enjoy!

Jeweled Hair Accessories

Chels rose headbandHAPPY NEW YEAR!  Around this time of year, it seems that people are wearing cuter accessories since it gets so cold it’s hard to dress warmly while you are freezing your A#$ off.  We love headbands.  They are the best accessory to tone your hair down when it’s acting wild or jazz up a simple sweater.  Here are some of our favorites.

Britt AnthroFor fancier jeweled head bands, we like Anthropolgy’s selection.

Chelsea AnthroThe soft toned head bands look amazing with Chelsea’s dark hair.  This is another Anthropology gem.

Britt 20s headbandThis beautiful and sparkly head band was hand made by our good friend, Lindsay.  She made a handful of these gorgeous head bands for her Roaring 20’s birthday party and these were laying around her “speak easy” for people to try on and have as a keepsake.  Great idea!

Chelsea Braided HeadbandThis braided number is much more subtle.  If you pick a head band color close to your hair color it will be a much more simple approach.  Picking the opposite color is more for a stand out piece.  Both work great but wearing a wild outfit and wild head band could put you in the running for a “homeless vs. hipster” contest that you didn’t even know you signed up for.

Britt Nordstrom headbandHead bands are also great because you can wear them any way you please.  You can also find them anywhere.  Our favorites come from Anthropology, Nordstrom and (of course) Forever21.

New Years Nails

We’re back!  Well I’m back while Chelsea prances around Paris.  We hope you all had a great holiday though and a great week.  Chelsea wanted special nails for Paris since she will be spending the New Year under the sparkling lights of the Eiffel Tower.  This is very easy, considering our last nail attempt was a fail.

IMG_64931.  Paint your nails with a flat color coat that you want to go with the color sparkles you will use.

IMG_6501 2.  Once the first coat dries, start painting the sparkles on the very end of your nails lightly.  Apply as much as you’d like.

IMG_65253.  Boom!  Much better than our last nail fail and very cute.

You can pull this off really easily and quickly.  Get sparkly and enjoy bringing in the New Year!  See you all in 2013 🙂
