Goodbye to an Icon.

david-bowie-06

By now you have most certainly heard the news that the music world has suffered a great loss. David Bowie was a movement; a man unafraid to be himself and reject the norm. Artists like him are a rarity and I am afraid that we may never experience an icon like him ever again. He had the ability to evolve and reach multiple generations, he always remained fresh and original.

I wasn’t raised on Bowie’s music, although I had heard Changes, Heroes, Fame, Suffragette City and all of the hits when I was younger. I was taken by the alternative music scene in the early/mid 90’s, that was (and honestly still is) my jam. The video above was my first taste of really falling love with a Bowie song- it’s one of my favorite covers ever, performed by Nirvana in 1993.

In 1997 Bowie performed with Billy Corgan (and countless others) to celebrate his 50th birthday. I think this was the moment that I understood how cool he was- this man in the high collared coat performing alongside my idol. To me, at this time, he was clearly an influence to the people who influenced me and that made him special in my eyes.

labyrinthbowie1999. New Years Eve- the night the world was supposed to end when the year turned to 2000. A few of my friends and I decided to stay at home and watch Labyrinth featuring a 1980’s David Bowie. The clock was nearing 11P so we decided to pause the movie and walk downtown to our city’s New Years event and potentially catch a glimpse of Huey Lewis performing. He was playing in a large tent to a crowd of people who purchased 190 dollar tickets; that certainly wasn’t us because we were 16 years old and couldn’t wrap our heads around spending that kind of money on anything. Anyway, we caught a couple of glimpses of the band and noticed the clock was nearing midnight. At that time there was so much absurdity around what would happen at twelve (would computers spontaneously combust or worse, grow legs and take over the town?!) that we decided to head back to the house, you know, just in case. We huddled on the couch under a blanket, fired up the movie, and waited for the world to stop. But it didn’t and we celebrated with the Goblin King because that was the kind of 16 year olds we were- entranced by a natural performer on our tiny TV screen.

I’m not sure how to end this random note on a man who took chances and changed lives. I guess no one ever really dies, as long as the memories (and the music) live on.

Moto Leggings.

DSC_1032A couple of months ago a few friends and I checked out some cute boutiques in Petaluma, California. It was there that I found these great leggings that come in various colors. They have quickly become a staple in my closet because they spice up any outfit.

Anatomy of a Sunset.

DSC_0443While in Pt. Reyes, Nick and I took in the sunset. While I was sifting through our photos I noticed we captured the natural movement and really loved the way they looked side by side. I hope you do too.

Queenstown Botanical Garden.

DSC_0653We took a refreshing walk around part of Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu which held a frisbee golf course, botanical gardens, and a beautiful view of the lake (photos coming soon). We captured some great shots of the flowers blooming during a light drizzle on this brisk Summer day in New Zealand. God, I loved New Zealand.

I think there is no better place to be than a place covered in flowers.

Hobbiton.

I have just returned from a 3 week trip to Australia and New Zealand. It was so much fun but I am happy to be home and sleeping in my own bed! While I have so many amazing things that I am going to share with you, I want to start with my favorite night of the trip- the evening we spent in Hobbiton. Oh yes, it’s real. And if you are anything like me- you are obsessed with the magic of these incredible films. Being there made me relive the fun and fantasy all over again. If you have a chance to go to the North island of New Zealand, don’t miss this one of a kind attraction!

Bold Prints.

IMG_9889On my very first trip to New York ever, I made it into a very packed Zara in SoHo and found this awesome dress. I absolutely love the print and mod feel, not to mention the cool middle pockets that I usually only find on sweatshirts. Another fun fact about this dress, Lena Dunham was recently wearing it while shooting the new season of Girls.

(Awesome pocket detail and a  playful coral costume ring)

IMG_9888

This is a great dress to slip on when the weather starts to heat up. The cut is simple but unique and I always gravitate towards anything that flares a bit. It’s a great dress for my build!

Take Me Back to Pisa.

It’s been a year since our Italy trip and one of our best days was spent in Pisa. We explored the small city, grabbed a few cappuccinos, a wine spritzer, some questionable pizza, and just had an overall blast.Pisa Italy(The wall of the city has an arch that give you a peek into the Tower, we were so excited when we found it!)

Pisa Italy(It was the most perfect weather we could have asked for. Also, all of the buildings are pristine; so white and clean)

Pisa Italy(I wonder if we were the first ones to think of doing this)

Pisa Italy(We visited a museum within the walls and I loved seeing these statues. An invading city chopped off all of their noses)

Pisa Italy(Inside the Duomo)

DSC_0306We had such a great time, I can’t believe it has been a year already! Time flies when you are having fun!

Day and Night.

There are tons of pieces in our closets that can be worn during the day and shifted a bit to work for night too. Here’s a new dress that I picked up at Anthropologie by the brand Saturday, Sunday. It’s super soft and comfortable which makes it great for day or night wear!

Day Night(Pop on some colorful sandals and it’s such an easy thing to walk out the door in)

Day Night(The double pony tail is a great way to keep your hair back, and pay some homage to your youth)

Day Night(It’s finally flip flop time! I always pick up a pair at Old Navy, they are only $2!)

Day Night(Hair down and paired with my favorite mules for night)

Day Night(Add a red lip too)

Day Night(Ombre nails are fun for day or night- I want to try grey next)

Day Night(Really chunky heeled mules are my go to for some height at the moment, I can’t handle a thin heel and I love how bold these are)

A simple change like letting your hair down and/or changing up your shoes can really change the way a dress can feel.

Inspirational Monday.

When Nick and I were in San Luis Obispo for Easter weekend, I snapped a few photos of the roses blooming in the backyard. After editing them to create a new finish, I added in some calming quotes by Buddha. These could actually make great desktop backgrounds and serve as a point to remind you to take a moment to relax today!

Rose1(When you realize how perfect everything is, you will tilt your head back and laugh at the sky)

Rose5(To conquer oneself is a greater task than conquering others)

Rose4(What we think, we become)

Rose3(Those who are free of resentful thoughts surely find peace)

Rose2(The way is not in the sky, the way is in the heart)

Happy Monday!
